 Any vented or unconditioned crawl space under your home is a bad idea, especially if you have a dirt floor. Even if the crawl space is not wet or flooded, it can be both unhealthy and destructive.
Soil has a naturally high humidity. This moisture spreads from your crawl space and up into the rest of your house. When your crawl space is damp, mold multiplies rapidly and releases millions of spores into the air, heating and air conditioning costs are higher (especially if it is a vented crawlspace), and rot and decay can cause structural damage.
Houses have a natural, bottom-to-top airflow. As air rises within the home it sucks in new air from the crawl space or basement and pushes exhaust air out of the upper levels. This means that mold spores and odors are pulled from your crawl space and into the rest of your house. There are a large number of people who have suffered from allergies for years not knowing that their crawl space is to blame.
 In the summer, warm humid air enters your crawl space and dumps its excess humidity in the form of condensation on your air conditioning conduits, water tank and anything else cool. Not only does this add to the moisture problem, but the outside air also warms those ducts and forces your air conditioner to work harder to cool your home. The opposite is true in the winter, with cold air making your heater warm the ducts before the hot air gets to your living spaces.
